The cake is frosted white. Then the star technique is used to decorate Sponge Bob.

Free Cake Decorating Ideas:

  • You can find the Wilton directions for decorating the pan.

  • Find a basic coloring page of Sponge Bob and blow it up if needed. Trace him on a 13x9 cake and decorate or paint the cake.

  • Decorate a cake with blue frosting and add under the sea effects. Add a toy or candle Spongebob and Patrick.

  • Cut out square pieces of cake or use brownies. Roll out yellow fondant and cut to fit each square. Add fondant face features to each square.

A Sophisticated Cake

Cover a round cake with yellow fondant. Cover the bottom half of the edge with a blue icing. Add fish and top the cake with one or several SpongeBob characters. A more experienced decorator can build a custom cake top using gum paste to shape seaweed and fish scene. This cake can be one layer or several layers of various sizes stacked one on top of another.

Sponge Bob Cake Pan Form or Free Form?

Using a character cake pan; a perfect silhouette.

You can find a SpongeBob cake form through cake decorating suppliers. The mold of the pan provides a guide for adding icing since you will be able to see the outline of his eyes, mouth, belt and other details. Use yellow, white, chocolate and red icing to decorate.

Free Form using a traditional rectangular pan

Option One: Design the cake to resemble SpongeBob lying on his back. The top two-thirds of the cake will be his yellow sponge head; the lower third of the cake will be his square shirts and pants.

Option Two: Build SpongeBob to be sitting up. Using two rectangle cakes cut each cake into thirds. Stack the six rectangles you have create with layers of icing or cake filling in the middle. Cover the cake with icing or fondant to characterize SpongeBob.

Cake Decorating with the Kids

Do the kids want to help? Let them use the backside of a spoon to smear blobs of yellow icing to resemble the uneven texture of a sponge. To add his face use candies. Here are some ideas.

  • Eyes - Oreo cookies with one cookie side removed. Add blue jellybeans, blue gel icing, or other blue candies for the center of the eye.
  • Big smile - use licorice to shape the mouth, add two pieces of white Chiclets gum for those big white teeth.
  • Nose - cover a large marshmallow with leftover yellow icing and put it where a nose belongs.
  • Red Tie - Trim a tie out of red fruit leather.
  • Brown Pants - Line the smooth side of chocolate candy bars side-by-side for pants.
  • Arms and legs - use ho-ho’s for the bulk of the bicep, thigh, shoes and hands. Use pretzel rods for the calf and forearm.
