Beautiful or scary a spider
birthday cake is a project that can be as
easy or as complex as you want. Create a multi-layered cake by using
baking bowls to bake the spider’s hump or you can use a sheet
cake
filled with all types of spiders. Both of these provide just two of the
many ways to produce arachnid fun.
Spider Birthday Cakes
by Cindy Godfrey
This was probably one of the easiest birthday cakes I've made for my
kids! I baked the cake mix in a round pan and finished off
the batter in cupcakes.
With used a star tip on my decorating bag and filled the bag, half with
purple icing and half with black. You could used any colors
you want, but this cake was for my son, so black and purple seemed like
great colors. (It was also close to Halloween)
I covered the entire cake and all the spider cupcakes with little
stars. Then I went back and added white circles with icing
for the eyes and a black center in the white to finish the
eyes. Then I added a crooked little smile. I used
bright pink.
The finishing touch is the legs. They're made out of pipe
cleaners, twisted and shaped. On the big spider I tucked the
legs under the cake, on the spider cupcakes I poked them in on the
sides.
Baking in Bowls
Many glass bowls can be used to bake round
shaped cakes, plus cake pans are available in round and spider shapes.
Once you bake the spider cake then decorating it will be a snap.
Colored sugar toppings, cream and liquid food coloring provide a color
palate to make any type of spider you want. Using sheet cakes to create
habitats for small plastic spiders is another way to create a spider
cake.
Creating Spider Legs and the Web
Make spider cake legs from thin, rectangular pieces of sheet cakes
arranged on both sides of the spider body. Use icing to help keep the
legs in place, while icing the surface makes this project easier.
Decorate sheet cakes iced in gray or blue icing with tube icing to
create a top spider’s web. Using plastic spiders, the web can
become
home to a wide variety of spiders and egg sacks created from
marshmallows. Plastic flies may be a fun way to expand this type of
decorated spider birthday cake.
Colors and Kinds of Cakes
Baking cake inside colored ice cream cone cupcakes provides a canvas
for creativity when making spider cakes. Turn brown cones into trees
with a spider dangling from a licorice whip web, while green cones may
be mossy ground where spiders wait in anticipation for an afternoon
snack.
Choosing a local spider species as the birthday cake provides a way to
combine education with entertainment. Scavenger hunts for spider webs,
spiders and the insects they eat allows guests to learn while having
fun. Having them eat the cake while comparing notes will encourage
exploration.
Learning about Spiders
Combining learning with cake provides the older child with
opportunities to explore the world around them whether inside or out.
Using plastic spiders as miniature cupcake decorations together with
small books created from educational websites can form part of a
scavenger hunt. Guests can choose a cupcake then see if they can match
their spider to one they find outdoors.
Since miniature cupcakes are smaller than regular ones letting party
guests eat two or three during the party will not be a problem. Spider
shaped cakes, spiders covering a cake or a spider birthday cake created
from individual cupcakes offers a variety of games, decorations and
fun.
