Sleepover Cake Ideas
As a child, there can be few more exciting things than a sleepover, but
good sleepover cake ideas are hard to come by. The name sleepover is a
bit misleading as sleep will be the last thing on your
child’s mind
when their friends come over for the night. A well thought out cake can
help set the right mood, as well as giving them a good dose of sugar
for a bit of a rush and hopefully a crash later on. Picking the right
design will depend on your child and the reason for the sleepover.
Sleepover Cake Inspiration
If you need inspiration for some sleepover cake ideas, you might want
to try:
A picture of the sleepover –
it’s easy to make a cake that looks like a group of people in
sleeping bags next to each other. Either make a series of oval shaped
cakes or make several Swiss rolls from sponge, cream and jelly. If your
in a hurry, you could also use Twinkies as they will have the right
sort of shape. Lay the cakes next to each other to represent the right
number of people coming to the sleepover. Roll out a sheet of colored
fondant and lay it out over the “people”. You can
then decorate the blanket as you see fit, as well as adding detail to
the faces and hair.
A pair of pajama pants – one of the key
parts of the sleepover ritual is the pajamas that the guests bring, so
it’s a good theme to choose for your cake design.
It’s also one of the more versatile sleepover cake ideas as
you can use any color design that you like. You might want to
personalize it by trying to recreate the design of the pants your child
will be wearing, or leave it open to decoration by their guests on
arrival. Either way, all you need are two rectangular cakes that you
trim at the top and join together at the right angle with icing.
A midnight feast theme – If you enjoy
making fondant sculptures out of icing for the top of a cake, then
making the necessary parts of a good midnight feast will look
fantastic. Items such as a bowl of candy, a sandwich or a bottle of
soda will not only look impressive but also fuel their imaginations for
the inevitable late night snack. The best design would be a circular
cake with a base layer of colored icing all over. Create each object
individually and use toothpicks to secure them to the rest of the cake.
You may want to experiment with the layout on a piece of paper before
you start.
The Decorating
Whichever of the many sleepover cake ideas you eventually choose to
make, you’ll need to decide whether you’re going to
make the whole cake as a surprise for the party or whether to let your
child have some input into the process. As an adult you’re
more likely to do a professional looking job, but it might be a good
way to get the party started to have your child and their guests help
out. You could go for a compromise where you make the outline of the
cake in the shape of the sleepers or pajama pants and then give your
guests the icing and necessary tools to decorate it as they see fit.
Above all, you will need to run your sleepover cake ideas past your
child.
