Retirement Cake Ideas

When someone comes to the end of their working career, finding good retirement cake ideas can be difficult, depending on the mood of the retiree. Some people take retirement as an extended holiday, a chance to jet off and see the world while they still can.

Others will have had it thrust upon them as they reach the retirement age set by the government or business. In either case, the cake decoration that you choose can help set the mood of the party to add excitement to see them go and on to new endeavors, or a commiseration at reaching the end of their career.

Cake Inspiration

The easiest option for retirement cake ideas is to make a stylish cake with calligraphy writing saying “Happy Retirement” followed by the person’s name. However, with a bit of time, preparation and effort, you can make a personalized cake that will bring a smile to their face. You might want to try themed cakes such as:

Travel

This will definitely go down well with those retirees aiming to live a second adolescence while seeing the world. A simple option could be to get a photo cake made with pictures of their destinations. You could then try and superimpose their face onto some of the pictures.

Otherwise, a cake in the shape of a boat or airplane will impress, and won’t be hard to do. You just need to make a rectangular cake and then use a template to get the right shape. The fun part is trying to get the icing right, so it might be worth having a practice run before the party.

Retirement Activities

Most people dream of the time when they are able to stay at home playing with their grandchildren or go out playing golf instead of working. If your retiree is planning the quieter kind of retirement, then these retirement cake ideas will work well for them. Try to make sure that you do a bit of research about what they are actually planning on doing rather than picking out stereotypical retirement activities.

Job Memories

These cakes are best for people who have reached retirement age or are being asked to retire. This could be a picture of their desk, the company logo or some inside joke that will remind them of the happy times they spent there. Be sure to take plenty of pictures of them with their cake to provide them with a memento of their party.

Above all, you’ll need to discuss your retirement cake ideas with the person who is retiring. Unlike a birthday where if you make a faux pas you always have the next year, a person only retires once so it’s important to get it right.

It may be worth having a few ideas to take to them and ask them for their preference. Don’t be offended if they don’t like any of them; if anything this means that you’ve saved them embarrassment at the party and yourself a lot of time and energy.
