Pirate Ship Cake

Pirate Ship Cake

My son loved the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, so this cake was a perfect fit for his birthday. After frosting 3/4 of the cake in blue icing (for the sky) I used a stencil of compass markings and used green decorating spray.

Using a picture to refer to, I free-handed the outline of the ship using a writing tip. Then I filled in the outline, first doing the wood. It was all done with the writing tip, making lines with it, to resemble the wood. All the details were added using a writing tip. For the sails, I filled in the outline and then smoothed it out.

The last detail was the water. I frosted the last 1/4 of the cake making "waves" in the icing, right up to the ship. Then I topped each wave with a little bit of white icing. Finally, I watered down blue food coloring and painted just the tops of the waves.
