Metal Spatulas for Cake Decorating
Metal spatulas are used to ice a cake. They are also used to fill
pastry bags and mix icing colors. There is only one type of spatula you
should use for cake decorating. A metal one!

Rubber spatulas are awkward when filling a pastry bag. The icing color
can stain a rubber spatula when used to mix icing colors. The worst is
trying to use one to ice a cake. The icing will stick to the spatula
and dig chunks out of your cake.
Use a rubber spatula to scrape your
bowls so you don't waste batter or icing. Other than that, stick with
a spatula that is metal when decorating a cake.
You can get these cake decorating spatulas in small, medium, or large.
They also come angled or straight.
I always recommend a medium, angled spatula. It is a good all-around
spatula. You can mix colors, fill pastry bags, and ice a cake all with
this one spatula.
The large straight spatulas work great for frosting larger cakes. They
are more flexible then the angled spatulas. The extra flexibility seems
to really make a difference when decorating a large cake. Just
something I have noticed over the years.
Ultimately, pick one that works best for YOU. What is easiest for me
may not be easiest for you. Find what works best and stick with it.
