If your little man has his heart set on a fire truck birthday cake this
year, then there are a number of different ways that you can easily
accomplish this. Following are just a few of our favorite fire
truck-inspired cake ideas to get you started on your way to a truly
remarkable birthday cake. Once you’ve finished your cake-decorating
masterpiece, don’t forget to show off your creative
desert in our
gallery.
Let’s Bake a Cake First
The first step is to preheat your oven to 350°F. Next, grease the
inside of your pan with solid vegetable shortening or use our pan grease recipe. At this point, we
would like to point out to never use liquid vegetable oil, margarine or
butter because your cake will end up sticking to the pan if you do.
Then sprinkle two tablespoons of flour inside the pan and carefully
shake it so that flour covers the entire greased surface area. Next,
turn the pan upside down and gently pat it to remove any excess flour.
After that, if you notice any leftover shiny spots, make sure to touch
up those areas with more shortening and flour to ensure that your cake
doesn’t stick to the pan.
The next step is to mix a two-layer cake by following the package or
recipe directions. Then pour the cake batter into the pan, and spread
the batter all around to fill all areas of the inside of the pan.
After that, bake your cake on the middle rack of your oven at 350°F for
30 to 40 minutes. Once baked, remove the cake from oven and let it cool
on a cake rack for at least ten minutes.
After the cake cools for at least an hour, your cake is ready to frost
and decorate.
Specialty Cake Pan
If you want to create a beautiful and eye catching fire truck cake, but
aren’t skilled in the areas of cutting and assembling 3D cakes, try
using a specialty fire truck cake pan, like the one made by
Wilton.
These custom shaped pans allow you to bake a cake as you normally
would. They also give you the opportunity to focus more attention to
the decorating. The quickest and easiest way to accomplish this is to
use the Wilton instructions posted on their website or you
can just use your own decorating techniques to create your own work of
art. Fire Truck Cake Pan
Image Cakes
Drawing freehand can be very difficult for most people and this is
especially true when drawing freehand with frosting, so thankfully,
there’s an easier way. First find an image of a fire truck that you
like, cut it out and place it on top of an unfrosted 13x9 sheet cake.
Then, frost the entire cake around the image, careful not to move it.
Make sure to allow your cake to set before moving forward with the
decorating. Once cooled and set, use black frosting and a piping tip to
outline the unfrosted area and use various candies and frosting colors
to add details to your truck. You can find additional information and
instruction regarding cake image tracing.
For those of you who are looking to build and assemble your own 3D fire
truck birthday cake, you have several options, depending on your skill
level. For the more advanced cake creator, find and use a template to
cut your cake pieces and assemble them accordingly. For the less
experienced baker, try using a large, store bought pound cake for the
body of your fire truck and add details. Check out the video tutorial
below for helping in assembling the fire truck.
So, if your little boy is having dreams of his very own fire truck
birthday cake, make him a cake that he will be talking about for years
to come. Using these simple cake ideas and your own creative decorating
techniques, you can easily create a one of a kind fire engine cake.

A Fire Truck Scene
An easy cake decorating idea is to make a fire engine scence. You can
create this by
decorating your frosted cake with fire truck candles.
Or use a cake decorating kit, see below for examples, or use your own
small toys to decorate the top of your frosted cake.

Our local volunteer fire department was having a fund raiser for a new brush truck. I volunteered to make some cakes for the silent auction.
