Dragon Cake for my granddaughter's Harry Potter Birhday Party
My granddaughter wanted a Harry Potter Birthday Party complete with a Dragon Cake. Enter Gramma. I found these tutorials online and used parts of both to make the cake.
I used this for the body and tail construction with the *variations below.

and this for the head construction except that I used cupcakes instead of dingdongs.

First prepare your spikes for his back by cutting fudge grahams in half diagonally. Set aside.
Next make his eyes. Cut a large marshmallow cut in half and dust the cut side with cornstarch to cover stickiness. Next cut the points off of two chocolate candy melts and ice them to the marshmallow pieces. Set aside.
We baked two cake mixes as three round layers and the rest into cupcakes - there were some of these left over. I didn't care for the little back legs on the tutorial so I made an extra layer. This let me make a bit larger cake also.
*Cut two of the layers into uneven halves making the cut about one inch off of center. Using the two largest layers, stack and ice together with tops of cakes facing. Then add one of the smaller layers to this stack, lining all of the layers up along the cut edge.
Carefully turn the stack over and add the other small layer to other side in the same manner. This will be his body and back leg haunches. Spread a bit of icing on your cake board to anchor and position this stack of cake on the icing on the board with the cut edges down. Add small pieces of cake for the feet.
Cut the third layer as shown in first link for the tail and neck, cutting it a bit wider to be in proportion to the larger body. Assemble as shown.
Construct the head (see the second link), stacking four cupcakes (two high side by side) for the head and then use a piece of the left over layer for the snout.
Ice the whole cake. Place the cookie spikes down his spine. Add the eyes, a couple of M&Ms for his nostrils, and bits of marshmallow for his claws. For his wings, we used fruit rollups. Open out four rollups so they are flat and cut a bat wing shape from two of them.
Lay toothpicks along the fold areas for "bones". Then lay the other two roll ups over the top sandwiching the tooth picks in place. Press down firmly to bond. Flip over and cut around the bat wing shape. Fold as along bones and attach to top of shoulders. Ta da! You have a dragon.
