Cupcakes are small. Cupcake party ideas are BIG!

Ask any 4 year old and she’ll tell you she wants cupcakes at her birthday party. But a cupcake party theme isn’t just for little girls. Cupcake themed bridal showers, and wedding cakes are all the rage. I even served cupcakes at my husband’s 40th birthday party.

Cupcake Decorating Party

The great thing about cupcakes is that anyone can decorate them. That’s why a cupcake decorating party makes a fun party theme.

The secret to a good party theme is to create a common thread with your decor, invitations and activities. Start with cupcake themed invitations, decorate with cupcake streamers or balloons, and plan your activities and games around cupcakes.

You can get free printable cupcake themed birthday party invitations at themed-party-ideas.com's printable party games page. They also have an entire cupcake theme party kit that includes invites, bunting, gift tags, and a "Pin the Cherry on the Cupcake" party game.

Cupcake Party Ideas and Cupcake Party Games

  1. Decorating Cupcakes is the #1 fun activity for your cupcake theme. Start with a great cake recipe. Consider providing two undecorated cupcakes for each guest.

That way they can eat a cupcake at the party and take home as a party favor. If guests take a cupcake home, provide fun cupcake containers or a clear cellophane cupcake bag. Attach a pretty cupcake themed tag to each box to identify who decorated the cupcake.

For a children’s party, provide a variety of candies, toppings and icings to embellish their cupcakes. Kids are naturals at exploring their creative side.

If your cupcake decorating party is for teenagers, you may want to brush up on some piping techniques and other fun cake decorating techniques that teens would find interesting, fun and challenging.

Like the icing on the cake, these next cupcake party ideas make for a memorable party!

  2. Give a Wish

Everyone knows that the birthday girl or boy gets to make a wish when he or she blows out the candle.

Tape a candle to each gift tag on your party favor boxes. Or, create two slits in your gift tags and slip candle through them. You can even write “make a wish” on your tags. When kids get home with the cupcake they decorated, their parents can light their candle, and they can make of their own wish.

  3. Cupcake Piñata

There’s something magical about piñatas. In my opinion, every kid’s party should have a piñata. I know lots of kids who would agree.

Because the cupcake party theme is very popular right now, cupcake piñatas are available at many party supplies stores.

  4. Pin the Cherry on the Cupcake

This party game is just like pin the tail on the donkey but with a cupcake and cherry.

It’s great fun to provide a prize for the person who pins the cherry closest to the top of the cupcake while blindfolded. The anticipation of winning a toy sweetens the pot!

  5. No Hands Cupcake Eating Contest This cupcake party game comes with a warning: it can be a mess. But, boy is it fun to watch. This game is fun for tweens and teens. Young children could choke, so use your best judgment when providing games.

The No Hands Cupcake Eating Contest is best played outside. But, for those brave enough to do it inside a plastic tablecloth is suggested…and wet wipes!

Line up one cupcake in front of each contestant. Tell players they must put their hands behind their backs. When you yell, “Start eating,” players must eat their cupcakes with their mouths only.

The first one to finish takes the cake!
