Gray Icing

by Missy

How do i make gray icing?

I am trying to get a light color of gray but I'm not sure what to use.

Thanks

Amanda's Answer:

Hi Missy,

To make gray icing you will want to use black paste or gel food coloring. Start by adding just a very small amount at a time until you get the right shade of gray.

Since you are using black color, be careful not to add too much at a time or it will be too dark. Remember, you can always add more color, but you can't take it away!

mixing frosting colors

Ok this may sound crazy but what do they mean when they saiy 1 part of an icing for example

2 parts kelly green 1 part yellow
what is the part? a toothpick ? I am new and a little confused.

Amanda's Answer:

Yes, when it says 2 parts to 1 it is saying two drops (if using liquid) to 1 drop or 2 toothpicks to 1.

However, I find that it is easier to get a nice shade of one color (green for instance) then add the yellow until you get the color you are looking for. In this case lime green. This keeps you from mixing the color too dark to begin with.

You can judge how much of the yellow to use by keeping track of how much green you add first. Then use the 2 to 1 ratio when adding the yellow.
