Bowling Ball Cake

A party favorite, your guests are sure to enjoy a bowling ball cake and party theme. After a few regular rounds of bowling, change things up. Direct guests bowl backwards, bowl with the wrong hand or have a round of the best Flintstones’ impressions. Have fun with the party and give awards for silly things like the best gutter ball. After building an appetite bowling, present your guests with your homemade a bowling ball cake.

For the Novice Decorator

Using a 9 by 13 in pan, choose you favorite cake flavor for easy-to-make bowling themed cut cake. Start by making a pin:

Follow the cake recipe
Let cool completely on a rack
Cut the cake diagonally, from one corner to the other
Continue to shape a bowling pin
Frost the cake with white frosting
Use red frosting or licorice for the stripes

Accompany the pin with a bowling ball:

Bake a cake in a round pan
Cut a little semi circle from the side to fit the ball next to the pin
Place the ball next to the pin, giving the appearance that the ball is slightly behind the pin
Take 2 colors of frosting (e.g. blue and purple) and frost the ball with a marble effect
Use candy or black frosting for the finger holes

Free Cake Decorating Ideas:

Add miniature bowling pins and a ball to the top of a frosted cake.
Use a round cake pan and decorate it to look like a bowling ball. Whatever color you like. Scoop out three holes for the bowling ball holes.
Use Wilton's decorating instructions for decorating a bowling ball.

You can make an easy cake shaped like a bowling ball by using the sports ball speciality pan. Pipe chocolate stars all over in the fill in star method.

However you can also make a bowling cake by shaping your cake, painting your cake with a pattern or adding figurines to the top of a frosted cake.

By using cupcakes, mini cupcakes and donut holes you can assemble bowling pins by assembling cupcakes and donut holes into a pin shape and frosting with white frosting. Red twizzlers or red stripe candy is added for the lines on the pins.

You can also bake a bowling ball cake in a circle pan to go along with your cupcakes.
