Beach Ball Cake
This beach ball cake makes a great swimming pool party cake or summer
fun cake. It is made
using
a ball pan.
You can also buy a
mini
ball pan and
make small ball
cakes for each guest or let guests decorate their own ball cake.
How to Make a Beach Ball Cake
Prepare your icing colors and bags in the colors you'd like your beach
ball to be. This cake was
made
into an ice
cream cake
so we had to work
fast and refreeze it every so often. We choose to smooth out
the
color but
you can also use the
stars fill in
method.
First crumb coat your cake. With a
clean ruler divide and make a straight line where you want your stripes
to be. Using black frosting and a writing tip make black lines. Or
white lines if you prefer.
Start filling in your ball
color by color. I finished each color with a zigzag design on
the end.
To smooth the color,
I added frosting in a sloppy fashion and smoothed it with a wet finger
or knife dipped in water. If you are adding stars it will just be a
matter of piping stars within each stripe.
To finish it off, I cut out a circle using a cookie cutter and a small
piece of white fondant.
Free Cake Decorating Ideas:
- If you don't want to make a 3D ball cake you can make a
beach
ball on a
round 8-9 pan. Use 1 layer or 2. Outline with a
toothpick,
where your white or black lines will
be. With a writing tip pipe your frosting lines. Fill in
different colors with a star tip. Decorate with a colorful border.
- Place a mini ball on top of a double layer round cake.
Decorate
the sides of your round cake blue like water. Decorate the tops blue
like water as well or add graham cracker crumbs to resemble sand.
Decorate your mini ball like a beach ball. This makes a great "day at
the beach" cake.
- if you would rather host a more interactive pool party use
a mini ball pan with which you can make small ball cakes. Once baked
these allow guests to decorate their own personal beach ball cake.
After baking the cake, select the icing colors for your beach ball cake
and then draw lines using a black frosting bag topped with a thin tip.
Actually, you can use any color of line you want but black contrasts
well with other colors and also adds some flashiness to the cake. Fill
in between the lines with alternating colors or patterns, such as
zigzags or diagonal lines.
When using mini beach ball cakes, arrange
guests around a table filled with icing tubes and have a contest to see
who is the most artistic when decorating their cake. Offer a funny door
prize as an incentive, such as a free pair of nose plugs or an
old-fashioned bathing cap.
