A very popular trend for children’s birthdays, a Barbie doll
cake is perfect for Barbie or Princess themed parties. This type of
cake is relatively simple to make and can be completely customized to
reflect your individual decorating style or the preferences of the
child for whom you are making it. With an infinite number of ways to
decorate these types of cakes, they are versatile enough to match
almost any style of ‘girly’ party decor.
Preparing the Cake
The typical Barbie doll cake has four layers that make up the dolls
skirt. Depending on the size of the skirt you are looking to make, you
will need several layers of cake. One of the layers is taller and more
rounded, for which you will need a small, glass, batter bowl. Create
the other layers by using typical 9-inch round cake pans. So, for an
average sized cake, you will need to bake two cakes in 9-inch cake pans
and one cake in the ovenproof glass bowl.
Once the cakes have finished baking make sure you level your cake.
The rounded top will serve as the dome of the
doll’s skirt when put together. Stack the layers then use a
knife or pastry cutter to cut a hole in the middle of each layer into
which you insert the doll later on.
Frosting the Barbie Doll Cake
Before you can decorate your Barbie doll cake, you will need to frost
and assemble it. Using the colored frosting of your choice, assemble
the skirt with the flat layers on the bottom and the dome on
top,
each with a thick layer of frosting between them to add flavor and keep
them together. Once assembled, cover the entire cake with a thick,
smooth layer of frosting; this will be your crumb coat. Refrigerate for
about an hour before beginning the decorating process.
Adding the Barbie
When finished, this Barbie doll cake will look like an elegant dress,
so naturally you will need someone to wear it. You can purchase a cake
Barbie from a craft or cooking store that will typically come without
legs, just a pick to attach the doll to the cake. You can also purchase
a cheap Barbie and take one or both of the legs off and use it the same
way. Avoid buying a Barbie that your child loves, as she might get
upset about you removing the legs.
Decorating
Once you have your doll, insert it into the cake through the holes you
created before assembling. You can then use frosting to fill in the
space around her to keep her from wobbling. Once your Barbie is in
place, use your frosting to add one last thick coat over the skirt. At
this point you can either decide to smooth it out or to use a kitchen
utensil to add texture to the skirt area.
After you have frosted the cake, you can then begin decorating the
surface of the dress and the doll’s bodice above the cake. If
the Barbie is wearing a top that matches the cake and you do not wish
to decorate it, leave it alone. If your doll is nude however, use a
frosting bag and tip to create a top to cover her. Embellish her dress
in a number of ways:
Consider a skirt with ruffles
and stars on the
top.
Use colored frosting to add a ruffle border, a swag with a
writing tip or drop
flowers.
If you are very creative, use
the writing tip to create a lacy skirt
Use decorative candy pieces in shapes like stars and hearts
to add an extra ‘girly’ flare.
Use all
white frosting for a wedding Barbie doll cake or use the birthday
girl's favorite colors.
